Formative Assessment We started off class by watching a educational video of how and where usually is a hurricane formed and some tips to be safe when a hurricane struck, as well as a couple of pictures of face hurricanes in the recent history off the United States. After that, the class collaboratively developed a "recipe" for a hurricane, from what they just learned about in the video as well as their previous knowledge on the concept. I brought to their attention to the fact that water is warmed by the sun and rises, and one of my students followed up with the statement "and that's how clouds are formed" without further explanation, which was surprising to me for a second grader. Ask students to think about the weather of summer and winter, and which is warmer. Use this information and what we learned about how hurricanes need warm water to form, ask students: When do hurricanes form, in the winter or the summer?

Summative Assessment Students answered what each material in their Hurricane bags stood for and represent through completing a worksheet.
For example, hurricanes form in tropical (warm) areas so the water needs sunlight to warm up, "when the cloud gets heavier it won't be able to hold all the water, and it would all fall down", |
